Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren has praised his side for earning a "professional" win over Northampton Town in the League Cup.
The Magpies booked their place in the third round of the competition last night with a 4-1 triumph at St James' Park.
The victory was McClaren's first since arriving at the club earlier this summer.
"It was a relief," he is quoted as saying by The Chronicle. "This was always going to be a difficult game. We started well and should have had three or four before half time. We started well in the second half and overall it was a professional job. It's nice win and score a few goals."
Newcastle resume their Premier League campaign on Saturday when they host Arsenal.
